Maelstrom

A private island. A tropical storm. A monster on the loose.

Gregory Haig, a nature photographer, accompanies his fiancée, Diane Stewart, an anthropologist, on an expedition to the Amazon to research indigenous tribes. He comes across illegal loggers who have captured some strange animal from the jungle, but when he tries to photograph it, he gets too close and is injured.

The two return to the States for Gregory’s family reunion on an island estate that has been owned by the Haigs for generations. The only family member he cares about is his teenage nephew Fletcher, who idolizes his uncle but has to live under the thumb of his controlling mother, Evelyn.

As Gregory grows ill, they soon discover his ailment has no treatment—he was infected by a parasite that quickly transforms him into a vicious creature with the ability to turn other people into its species. As the tropical storm bears down on them, the island’s inhabitants struggle to stay alive throughout the night as they  fall victim to the nightmare monstrosities’ hunger and urge to reproduce.
